Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE) is seeking 2 part time positions for an Oyster Hatchery intern, working on the Solent Oyster Restoration Project.
Where: University of Portsmouth, Institute of Marine Sciences, Ferry Road, Eastney, PO4 9LY
Who: Blue Marine Foundation Internship and Visiting Researcher Status at the University of Portsmouth working within the Restoration Ecology Research Group, led by Dr Joanne Preston. Working directly with PhD student and hatchery manager Monica Fabra (UoP) and Dr Luke Helmer (BLUE).
When: Monday to Friday (with occasional weekend work). Four months from start date June to October 2021, liaising with Monica Fabra around timings of flexible working hours.
Salary: These will be paid internships and will be based on a 20-hour working week per position, flexibility with hours will be required. Payment will be £8.91 per hour for each position.
What: This internship will involve assisting with the daily running of the oyster hatchery over the spawning season. Tasks will include daily feeding of broodstock, daily mortality checks, daily water checks, frequent growth monitoring, frequent aquaria cleaning, larval counts, algal cultivation and maintenance, preparation of cultch material for larval settlement and other tasks that may arise.
Required experience: Some basic knowledge of the native oyster Ostrea edulis, knowledge and experience of working in a working aquarium/laboratory.
Desirable experience: Animal husbandry, algal culture, knowledge of the Institute of Marine Sciences or how other institutions operate internally.
