What we do

Blue Marine is filling a niche in the NGO world, enabling marine conservation to happen fast and effectively. What differentiates Blue Marine is that we are well connected and determined; we seize opportunities as they arise and get things done. We forge new partnerships and challenge the status quo.

Blue Marine works using a combination of top-down intervention to improve governance of our seas and bottom-up project delivery to help local communities who are at the front line of ocean conservation.

Our three key strategic goals are as follows:

  • Securing marine protected areas to ensure the protection of at least 30% of the ocean by 2030.
  • Tackling overfishing, supporting sustainable, equitable use of the sea.
We tackle overfishing and other damaging activities. We support low-impact fishing and encourage a transition to fishing which benefits local economies and coastal communities without destroying the ocean.
  • Restoring marine habitats to revive and protect vulnerable and threatened species and to sequester carbon.
Blue Marine’s units are designed to challenge the way the ocean is governed and understood. They both support our location-specific projects and catalyse systemic change in their own right. Our strategies for change are: Blue Climate, Blue Economics, Blue Education, Blue Investigations, Blue Legal, Blue Media, Blue Policy, Blue Science.

The Crisis

The Crisis

Overfishing impacts the ocean’s biodiversity and ability to store carbon.

Our ocean is in crisis. Marine life is under threat from climate change, acidification, pollution and invasive species. But these threats are compounded by overfishing, which strips the ocean of life, and so reduces its capacity to produce oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide and regulate the climate. It’s estimated that almost 94% of commercial fish stocks are fully or overexploited and 90% of large, predatory fish are gone.

Overfishing therefore represents a major threat for the food security of millions and could have devastating consequences for Earth’s climate.
