Oceans denuded of fish cannot function effectively and are less resilient to problems like climate change, plastic pollution and dead zones. By designating marine reserves and banning industrial fishing, fish stocks are able to recover and ecosystems thrive.
BLUE is filling a niche in the NGO world, enabling marine conservation to happen fast and effectively. What differentiates BLUE is that we are well connected and determined; we seize opportunities as they arise and get things done. We forge new partnerships and challenge the status quo.
Although BLUE is a small NGO, it punches above its weight, having achieved a tremendous amount for the oceans in a short time.
BLUE works using a combination of top-down intervention to improve governance of our seas and bottom-up project delivery to help local communities who are at the front line of ocean conservation.
BLUE’s mission is to see at least 30% of the world’s ocean under effective protection by 2030 and the other 70% managed in a responsible way.
Our key strategic interventions are as follows:
3.25 million square kilometres of ocean protected
21 project locations all over the world
Overfishing represents a major food security issue and has devastating consequences for the fragile biodiversity of our planet.
Our oceans are in crisis. Around 90% of commercial fish stocks are fully or over-exploited and 90% of large, predatory fish are gone. Marine life is under threat from climate change, acidification, pollution, invasive species and plastic. But arguably the greatest threat of all is from overfishing because oceans stripped of all their life will have even less resilience to the other threats. It is the complex web of marine life in the oceans that enables them to absorb nearly half the world’s carbon dioxide and produce half our oxygen. Overfishing, therefore, threatens the future of humanity.
BLUE’s Executive Director
“We have just squandered one of the greatest resources that we’ve ever had on the planet – wild fish”
Founder, Forum for the Future
“We desperately need more big solutions to the continuing crisis in the world’s oceans and we need them developed and deployed urgently. That’s what BLUE exists to do”
Chairman and Co-Founder of Carphone Warehouse, 1 star BMYC Member
“BLUE makes a real and vitally important difference to the health of the ocean and the life beneath the waves. It gives me great pleasure to renew my membership of the BMYC, assured that my donations will be used to protect the awesome beauty and well being of the marine world.”
By working together, we can turn the tide on overfishing and the destruction of biodiversity. By supporting BLUE, you can help to create marine reserves around the world.
