Political decisions over recent decades have brought many of the UK’s fish populations, and the fisheries dependent upon them, to the point of collapse. At the heart of this failure lies continues and extensive overfishing.
Overfishing remains the single greatest and most preventable threat facing our seas. It is the primary driver of fish population depletion and the degradation of marine ecosystems. Yet unlike many of the other challenges confronting the marine environment, it can be ended through political will alone. No single action would do more to restore abundance to our seas, rebuild fish populations and secure a healthy ocean for future generations than ending overfishing.
