Blue Marine has been working closely with local stakeholders to effectively protect Italy’s marine environments, conserve biodiversity and restore vulnerable habitats.
We are working with Greenpeace to turn Italian ‘paper parks’ – areas where protection is designated but not properly enforced – into effective MPAs to hit United Nations sustainable development targets for 2030. We also work to protect the Mediterranean’s most vulnerable marine ecosystems from destructive fisheries with ClientEarth, Environmental Justice Foundation and Seas At Risk.

Rich in sea life, poor in conservation – Greece aims to transform that narrative with a recent commitment to protecting 32 per cent of its waters by 2030. Blue Marine supports ocean protection here across ten different projects .
Despite being protected, sharks and rays are being drastically overfished through-out the Mediterranean. Blue Marine are working with partners to develop area-based elasmobranch protections in the Strait of Sicily and improve compliance with existing fisheries restrictions.
Turkey has the largest network of highly protected marine areas in the Mediterranean. Blue Marine’s collaborates with local partners here to enforce protection – a model that we hope to reproduce in locations around the world.
