Blue Marine supported the development of a waste management strategy for Ascension Island as part of the Darwin Plus DPLUS047 project. Historically, waste was openly burned and landfilled, posing environmental and health risks. The project aimed to build local waste handling capacity, improve recycling, and reduce pollution. Key achievements included constructing a Household Waste Recycling Centre, introducing high-temperature incineration, expanding recycling efforts, and launching the “Recycle for Ascension” campaign. Stakeholder engagement was largely positive. Lessons from St Helena’s managed landfill and recycling practices also informed recommendations for Ascension’s future waste management.
