National Marine Parks - Guidance

In 2021, Blue Marine Foundation released a vision for National Marine Parks in British Seas. The national vision was based on insights from supporting the evolution of Plymouth Sound National Marine Park, and research into the existing range of coastal and marine designations relative to National Parks. It showcased ten potential locations to further the conversation about the potential for National Marine Parks in Britain.

National Marine Parks - Legal Review

‘Two things are characteristic of this age, and more particularly of this island. The conscious appreciation of natural beauty, and the rapidity with which natural beauty is being destroyed … This passion for natural beauty that consumes so many of us to-day, found recent expression … in the sphere of practical effort …’

Restoring the Sturgeon to Irish Waters

The sturgeon has an ancient lineage; It has been swimming in rivers and seas since Jurassic times, 201-145 million years ago. For this reason, they are sometimes referred to as ‘living dinosaurs’. Yet few in Ireland have any living memory of the fish. This is a loss not only for the ecosystems upon which we depend but also for our culture and heritage.

Convex Seascape Survey Annual Report - Year One

One of the critical, unsolved scientific questions of our time is how the ocean impacts climate change. The seascape is the ultimate sink for carbon emissions and, in a time of climate emergency, could be an immense ally in efforts to slow runaway planetary warming.

“This is a landmark decision for the management of the UK’s coastal waters. Sussex’s remarkable kelp forests will now have a chance to regenerate and provide a home for hundreds of species, creating an oasis of life off the coast, enhancing fisheries and sequestering carbon in our fight against climate change.” Sir David Attenborough, in response to the Sussex Nearshore Trawling Byelaw

BLUEprint for MPAs

This BLUEprint provides guidance for groups and communities planning or developing a marine protected area (MPA) through a framework of questions. The guidance is supported by case studies drawn from projects where Blue Marine Foundation has had years of involvement. It is designed to be used by anyone championing the establishment of a new MPA or involved in its management and we hope it provides some useful insight to support long-term success.
