Minimum Requirements for Responsible Drifting FAD Use

Universally, the management of drifting fads is weak, characterised by an absence of responsibility on the part of owners and operators for the impacts of their fads on ocean ecosystems.

Opportunities for Nature Recovery within UK Offshore Wind Farms

David Tudor, Projects Director at the Blue Marine Foundation – “There are lots of barriers, but clearly none of these are insurmountable. There is a huge potential for offshore wind farms to enable both nature enhancement and a net zero carbon world.”

Strong Overseas, Weak at Home. Parliamentary Briefing

All life on Earth depends on the health of our ocean. However, the ocean is in crisis, pushed to its limits by overfishing, which is threatening the ocean’s capacity to provide its vital functions of providing oxygen, absorbing CO2 and regulating the Earth’s temperature.

Cuttlefish Symposium Proceedings

“To share what we know about cuttlefish and their fishery and to start a collaborative discussion about what is needed to protect their populations and establish a sustainable and viable fishery for the future. We hope we can all ultimately and collectively input to the development of a fisheries management plan for cuttlefish.”

Assessment of Carbon Capture and Storage in Natural Systems within the English North Sea

This report was commissioned by the North Sea Wildlife Trusts, Blue Marine Foundation, WWF and the RSPB to assess the extent, scale, distribution, and potential of the current blue carbon sinks in the English North Sea. The focus was to review the current extent and distribution of each blue carbon habitat, estimate the quantity of carbon currently stored within these habitats, establish the average net sequestration rate and estimate the potential net total sequestration of each blue carbon habitat.

BLUE CARBON: A new frontier for conservation

“While we know that bottom trawling has utterly devastated whole tracts of ocean floor, we do not yet know the full extent of its impacts in terms of carbon. The brilliant Enric Sala believes that trawling causes the same level of emissions as the aviation sector, and if that’s even nearly true, we need to step up our research, and fast.” Rt Hon Lord Zac Goldsmith Minister of state for the Pacific and the Environment

Fish Aggregating Devices in Responsible Tuna Fisheries Symposium Report

Fish Aggregating Devices, or FADs, are a fishing tool used primarily by purse seine tuna fisheries. A FAD constitutes a quantity of floating material that is set out at sea, around which marine species such as tuna congregate. Fish attracted to FADs can become easy targets for encircling purse seine nets. FADs can be drifting (dFADs) or anchored (aFADs).
