It is with profound sadness that we have to inform you that our beloved colleague, Dr Juliette Scott, died of cancer a few weeks ago. This may come as a surprise to some as she had chosen to continue working up until the end.
Juliette was an exceptionally talented jurist. Trilingual in English, French and Italian she was a global leader in legal translation: an underappreciated skill which makes so much of the world go around.
In 2022 she joined the Blue Marine Foundation to apply the skills she learned in government and the private sector to marine conservation. She had an extraordinary tenaciousness in breaking down any problem into its constituent parts and carefully piecing them back together. She had a rare gift of uncovering some part of the equation, which others had overlooked, but turned out to be its most important feature. She was intelligent, kind, thoughtful, kept her own counsel and supported those who needed it most. You knew if Juliette approved of something, no further questions needed to be asked and if Juliette said she would do something, the resultant work was not what was asked for, but what was needed.
She worked with Dr Tom Appleby in Blue Marine’s Legal Unit and leaves various legacies of information gathered, papers written and legal proceedings started which will continue to be the basis of Blue Marine’s work for years to come.
To her small circle of close collaborators, she is irreplaceable.
Here is a picture of Juliette at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the UK – EU Sandeels arbitration in the Hague characteristically at the back scribbling notes, but in reality supporting some of the UK’s leading lawyers: Professor Catherine Barnard, Cherie Blair, Ali Al-Karim and James Palmer, among whose exceptional company Juliette still shone.
