Jersey has approved a plan to expand its marine protected areas, covering 21.7 per cent of the island’s waters. The decision means that these areas, which include some of the rarest and most sensitive habitats in the region, will be protected from damaging fishing practices such as dredging and trawling. BBC Radio Jersey interviewed Freddie Watson, Blue Marine’s Channel Islands Project Manager, regarding the decision. He said these areas will “act as a safe haven for sustainable fishing, while also giving an opportunity for biodiversity to thrive and allowing our marine habitats to play their role in helping to combat climate change… It makes me proud to be from Jersey.”
