Blue Marine Foundation has been actively involved in advocating for the adoption of electronic monitoring (EM) standards within the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC). In May 2023, the IOTC became the first regional fisheries management organization to adopt comprehensive EM standards, including guidelines for system design, data collection, and analysis. These standards aim to enhance transparency and accountability in tuna fisheries, addressing issues such as illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
