A false benchmark: the modern reality of Antarctic krill fishing and the global call to end the exploitation of a critical marine species.
Alongside over 30 conservation organisations and independent experts, we have signed an open letter to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) raising concerns on its 2026 State of the World’s Fisheries and Aquaculture report which described the Antarctic areas a global benchmark for ecosystem-based fisheries management.
Antarctica is changing rapidly, and the Southern Ocean wildlife is already under immense stress. Climate impacts are intensifying, krill catches have reached record levels, and krill fishing is taking place in critical wildlife feeding grounds.
