Blue Marine Foundation supported the Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands in announcing major enhancements to its Marine Protected Area in early 2024. The upgrades expanded “No Take Zones” by 166,000 km², meaning 36% of the region’s waters are now fully protected from fishing. Blue Marine, as part of the Great Blue Ocean coalition, helped shape these measures, which include bans on bottom trawling, longlining, and krill fishing. The strengthened protections aim to safeguard vital breeding grounds and unique marine ecosystems, reinforcing the islands’ role as a global leader in science-based ocean conservation.
