Thank you so much for your support in 2020. Thanks to you, BLUE was able to notch up some significant conservation achievements, in spite of all the challenges this year.

Ocean waters between 200 and 1000m deep – the Twilight Zone – sustain immense quantities of fish, believed to be greater than the combined mass of all fish living closer to the surface, that the fishing industry is keen to exploit. But their value to the planet’s life support system and in climate mitigation is likely far greater than their value as food. We must urgently protect them from fishing while we undertake research to determine their importance in global ocean processes.

The deep ocean is the largest ecosystem on the planet, providing 95 per cent of all habitable space. With less than 1 per cent of it explored, there is no place on Earth that we know less about. Once mined, we will not see recovery of those habitats in human timescales, leaving nodule-dwelling species, such as corals, sponges and anemones, without a home.

This European Native Oyster Habitat Restoration Handbook aims to provide foundational and practical guidance on the restoration and conservation of native oysters (Ostrea edulis) and native oyster habitat across the UK and Ireland. The guidance outlined throughout the Handbook is also of relevance to projects across the native oyster’s biogeographic range.

One and a half million metric tons of yellowfin tuna were caught worldwide in 2018, with a dock value of US$4.4 billion and an end value of almost US$16 billion. The Indian Ocean accounts for roughly 30 per cent of the world’s yellowfin tuna catch. Sold in cans, as steaks or raw as high-value sashimi, yellowfin tuna is one of three species of tropical tuna under the management of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC). The Indian Ocean yellowfin tuna stock has been overfished and subject to continued overfishing for more than five years and, as a result, is now at risk of collapse.

The Dogger Bank, a vital underwater ecosystem in the North Sea, supports a rich diversity of marine life, including soft corals, sharks, rays, and vital species like cod and whiting, making its protection from harmful fishing practices crucial to preserving its unique biodiversity.

The Dogger Bank has protected status as three Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) under the EU Habitats Directive. However, the site is intensively fished by fleets from the UK and EU Member States. Despite designation as Sites of Community Importance back in 2007 (Germany), 2009 (The Netherlands) and 2012 (UK), no active management measures are in place to restrict the use of ecologically damaging fishing gears.

Blue Marine Foundation is concerned about the inconsistent usage of Automatic Identification System (AIS) by Spanish and French-flagged tuna purse-seine vessels operating in the Western Indian Ocean.

The Fisheries Bill represents a rare and crucial opportunity to reshape the future of UK fisheries, impacting how, where, and what we fish for, and determining who benefits from these activities—making it essential that this legislation is carefully crafted to address the longstanding mismanagement of our marine resources.
