Research by US scientists working in partnership with Blue Marine Foundation has found that some of the most threatened shark species, including critically endangered great whites, are being sold in North African fish markets. By monitoring several fishing ports in the region, Blue Marine and researchers discovered that at least 40 great whites were killed in 2025 alone. A two week expedition by the team in the Strait of Sicily aimed to find, tag and study sharks, but despite baiting and using underwater cameras, they did not manage to find any. James Glancy from Blue Marine added that if countries around the Mediterranean worked together to address this ecosystem degradation, “there is hope. But,” he added, “we’ve got to act very quickly”.
