Blue Marine is helping to prevent illegal fishing in Indonesia’s Raja Ampat archipelago, home to more than 1,638 reef fishes and 534 hard corals — an astonishing 67 per cent of the world’s described species.
The marine protected area (MPA) of 445,000 sq km around the South Atlantic island is part of a UK conservation programme that safeguards 4.4 million sq km of ocean – the largest and most diverse in the world.

The sturgeon has existed for 200 million years, and the UK’s two native species were once widespread in its rivers and coastal waters. Blue Marine is working to restore the UK populations.
Located in the Atlantic between South Africa and South America, this UK Overseas Territory is the world’s remotest inhabited island. Yet the small community here has protected an area of ocean three times the size of the UK.
Turkey has the largest network of highly protected marine areas in the Mediterranean. Blue Marine’s collaborates with local partners here to enforce protection – a model that we hope to reproduce in locations around the world.
Shark fins for export are the main target of the Uruguayan fishing fleet. But now the government intends to protect 30 per cent of its Exclusive Economic Zone by 2030. Blue Marine is helping them achieve that goal.
In March 2025, Blue Marine sued the British government for allocating fishing quotas in excess of scientific advice. The courts found against our claim, but we now intend to appeal the decision.
For the Wild Oysters Project, Blue Marine extended its proven model for community restoration of the loveable bivalves to Scotland, Wales, and the North-East.
