Organisations have criticised the UK for rejecting an EU proposal to set mackerel quotas in line with scientific advice, despite warnings that the north-east Atlantic’s most valuable fish stock is already in a state of collapse. Scientific bodies have advised a 77 per cent cut in catches to give the species a sustainable future, yet the UK joined most parties in blocking the measure after a decade of chronic over-allocation that has driven a 77 per cent decline in the population since 2015. Blue Marine CEO, Clare Brook, added: “After 10 years of mismanagement of the largest fishery in the north-east Atlantic, it is pitiful to see the same mistakes being made, leading to another collapsing stock.”
