Blue Marine Foundation has long raised the alarm on the climate impacts of bottom trawling, and a new global study reinforces this stance. The research reveals that bottom trawling releases up to 370 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, comparable to aviation emissions, by disturbing carbon-rich seabed sediments. Blue Marine supports scientific initiatives like the Convex Seascape Survey to better understand and protect oceanic carbon stores, often referred to as “blue carbon.” The findings validate Blue Marine’s advocacy for tighter seabed protections and a shift away from destructive fishing practices that threaten both marine biodiversity and climate stability.
