Since the 1980s, Sussex’s kelp forests declined dramatically due to storms and trawling. A 2021 byelaw banned trawling to aid recovery. Surveys now monitor crab and lobster populations, showing early findings but highlighting that full recovery takes years.

At the time we were cautiously coming out of a Covid lockdown, which feels like an increasingly distant period of our lives. Quota can be a highly effective environmental tool for sustainably fishing stocks, but environmental tools work most effectively when they have social licence. Blue Marine has a key concern arising from research conducted in both the UK and around the world, that a poorly constructed quota market can have adverse consequences on fishing communities themselves and therefore perverse consequences on the ground. Environmental legislation is only effective if it supports long term stability in decision-making.
