British actor and environmental advocate Theo James has today been announced as a new ambassador for Blue Marine, a charity dedicated to restoring the ocean to health by creating marine reserves and tackling overfishing. Theo James is best known for his on-screen performances in Guy Richie’s The Gentlemen and the second series of White Lotus, and will be supporting Blue Marine’s mission to see 30 per cent of the ocean under effective protection by 2030, with the other 70 per cent responsibly managed.

Motivated by his love for the ocean, Theo first learned of Blue Marine by reading co-founder Charles Clover’s End of the Line and Rewilding the Sea, which detail both the critical challenges facing the ocean, and the tendrils of hope in its restoration to health. The actor and activist also contemplated studying marine science at university, revealing his passion for the sea from a young age.

During his role as Blue Marine Ambassador, Theo will be supporting the charity’s conservation efforts around the globe. This includes Blue Marine’s ongoing efforts in the Aegean – aligning with his Greek heritage – which aims to restore Greek waters to their former glory by championing the Greek government’s pledge to protect 30 per cent of national waters, supporting sustainable fishing and encouraging a shift to catching and eating invasive species such as lionfish.

Upon his appointment, Theo James said: “Becoming a Blue Marine Ambassador gives me an incredible opportunity to contribute to the urgent work needed to protect our ocean. I’ve always been fascinated by the sea. Over time, this has grown into a passion for ocean conservation and I’m grateful to be able to turn this passion into a meaningful commitment.”

Clare Brook, CEO of Blue Marine Foundation adds: “It’s always thrilling to be joined by someone with such an authentic and genuine passion for what we do. When I met Theo, I was immediately impressed by his deep understanding of the climate and biodiversity crises and his curiosity about how effective ocean conservation can be. With Theo’s help, we can improve awareness of the challenges facing the ocean in this critical decade for repairing our relationship with nature.”

James continues: “I’m eager to ensure future generations – including my children – can enjoy a healthy ocean, and that means safeguarding it now.”
